Sacrifice Holiday or Bairam in Turkey
Today is the second day of Kurban Bayrami ( The feast of sacrifice) . After such sad tsunami disaster , cousin's cancer news and another human made tsunami in Iraq , it hasn't been so happy Bairam for us .
I want to tell about Kurban Bairam a bit . Houses are cleaned from top to bottom . Shopping is made . The day before the Bairam children grab a bag and they start to ring the bells and they bid for a happy Bairam and we give them candies , balloons or chocolates even small dolls or cars . On the very first day everybody is busy with cutting and sharing and delivering the meat . The second day they start visiting each other .
As a tradition older people are visited by the younger ones on the first two days . Kids are given pocket money or presents . Bairams are good excuses for giving presents to each other among the family members or relatives. Older people and kids are the most important in these days . By the way If mother or father or other members of the family aren't alive they are visited in the cemetary first . Then living ones are visited.
Chocolate and candies are served to the guests first , then turkish coffee or hot or cold drink shortly what is desired with baklava ( a Turkish dessert) by the guest but no alcohol. If they are hungry we serve food . Generally same things are cooked in each house such as rolled raisin leaves , seasonal salad , ashure or hoşaf ( made with dried raisins) sütlaç ( a kind of dessert made with rice and milk) , meat, a vegetable dish cooked with meat , baklava . Time is not important if the guests are hungry we prepare the table .
